Emerging SDR programs in Defense
Session 1B Wednesday, June 22
Room: Leopold 2
The Core Software Stack for New SDR Entrants, CRC
The core software stack is the beginning point for any software defined radio.
The operating system, middleware, core framework and development tools are the foundation for development of a radio. Over the last several years, companies embarking on an SDR project have a "buy or build" decision for these core software stack components. Has the core SDR technology matured enough so that third party tools are sufficient? If you decide to buy the tools, what should you require from your vendor? What are the risks of buying tools from a vendor? What are the risks of building the tools yourself? How will these decisions impact your project in project risk, time-to-market and cost? This presentation will analyze, from the perspective of a new SDR entrant, the pros and cons of building your own tools or purchasing them from a third party vendor, and ways to mitigate the risk regardless of the decision that you make.
Waveform Development for New SDR Entrants, Etherstack
The waveform is the core of the communication capability of the radio. A waveform is much more than simple modulation. It can represent the entire user experience from input to output, including security features. How should a new SDR entrant approach waveform development? Are there commercial, or third-party (official on unofficial) waveforms available? What are the risks of third party waveform development? If you decide to acquire third party waveforms as part of your development, what should you require from your vendor? What part of waveform development do you need to do in any event even if you acquire third-party waveforms? If you build waveforms yourself, are there opportunities to bring third-party expertise into your project? What are the potential problems that might result from third party waveform development? What are the potential problems from in-house waveform development? How will these decisions impact your project in project risk, time-to-market and cost? This presentation will analyze the myriad possibilities that are available to a new SDR entrant, and discuss ways to mitigate the risk of waveform development.
